Fashion in the United Arab Emirates has been rapidly increasing over the years as the cities themselves continue to grow. People are turning more to fashion as a way of expressing who they are, a sense of individuality. I got the opportunity to attend Fashion Forward Dubai for 3 days. It’s a perfect example that drives forth fashion in the region. Its the platform for fashion in the Middle East where regional designers can show case their collections for people to admire and get inspired.
Fashion Forward includes different catwalk shows of both couture and ready-to-wear collections, presentations, inspiring talks, film screenings, and panel discussions. There is also an area know as ” The Showcase” where top regional jewellery and accessory designers display their beautiful creations. Day 1 included catwalk shows by Hussein Bazaza, Jelena Bin Drai, and Kristina Fidelskaya.
The first day was such a fun experience especially since it was my first time there. There were so many stylish people with amazing outfits, people were so friendly, and just the whole environment filled with fashion enthusiasts was delighting. The food was also so good, especially the free ice cream and frozen yogurt at the pepsi lounge. I got my sister to go with me so I wasn’t too lonely, and got to annoy her a bit by constantly asking her to talk pictures of me. The event was held at the Dubai Design District, which was slightly hard to find for a person who doesn’t live in Dubai (don’t forget to bring a GPS next time). I got to talk to many bloggers and designers, got my pictures taken for various magazines, and also got to be interviewed for a Style program on MBC1. I could definitely do this everyday. For the first day, I wore my BCBG Max Azria dress paired with Casadei boots. After an amazing first day, I was even more excited for Day 2.
The first collection that showcased at Fashion Forward Dubai raised the bar high with different colours, fabrics, textures, and prints. Hussein Bazaza created such elegant and gorgeous pieces, making it look so effortless and easy. I loved the combination of prints on different fabrics and the use of different textures. I also loved the metallic like fabrics inspired by astronomy and alchemy. The details on the pieces are incredible and most either printed or sown in.
Jelena Bin Drai
This collection had some elegant and bold stand out dresses. Floral patterns were used in many pieces as a decoration for a border or as a whole piece of clothing such as a skirt or dress. This floral patterned lace fabric created an elegant aura however the few red dresses showed a different, edgy and bold side. One of my favorite pieces was the red dress that was low cut in front and longer in the back. It’s simplicity made it beautiful and captivating.
This collection had a mix of vintage and modern styles that result in pieces worn by woman to feel powerful yet feminine. From grey tones and checkered patterns to pink pastel colours, the collection was more for an elegant event or an evening date to show off a woman’s class in style.
